Step by step

  1. 1

    The deal

Each player receives 10 cards. The rest form the stock pile; the top card is turned face up to start the discard pile.

  2. 2

    Build melds

A meld is a set (3 or 4 cards of the same rank) or a run (3+ consecutive cards of the same suit). Cards not in a meld are your deadwood.

  3. 3

    Draw and discard

On your turn draw one card - from the stock or the discard pile - then discard one card. Keep your hand at 10 cards.

  4. 4

    Knock

When your deadwood counts 10 points or less you may knock to end the hand. Face cards are 10, aces are 1, others count their number.

  5. 5

    Go Gin

Meld all 10 cards with zero deadwood and you have Gin - the best way to end a hand, with a 25-point bonus.

  6. 6

    Race to 100

Points are scored after every hand. The first player to reach 100 points wins the match.

Tips for new players

  • Keep your deadwood low - fewer points mean faster wins.
  • Watch what your opponents pick up from the discard pile; it reveals the melds they are building.
  • Discard high cards you do not need early - do not hold on to what does not help you.
  • Knocking early is often better than waiting for Gin when the stock is running low.
  • Use the Best Sort button to see your melds and deadwood at a glance.
